Birmingham City have officially appointed former Manchester United executive John Murtough as their new director of football, marking a significant step in the club’s ambitions to return to the Premier League.<\/p>\n
Murtough, who spent 11 years at Manchester United before leaving in 2024, joins Birmingham after working as director of global development at Italian club Atalanta.<\/p>\n
The experienced football executive will oversee recruitment, squad planning, academy development and the club’s wider football strategy, working closely with head coach Chris Davies. His appointment comes as Birmingham’s American ownership group, Knighthead, continues to invest in the club’s long-term future. The Blues are currently fourth in the Championship following three consecutive victories.<\/p>\n
Murtough will officially begin his new role on Monday, replacing Craig Gardner, who departed earlier this year.<\/p>\n
